Pattern of weight gain in pregnant women and effect on maternal and neonatal outcome in Abuja, Nigeria: A longitudinal multicentre study

Background: Normal pregnancy is usually associated with weight gain. Abnormal gain in could result adverse neonatal and maternal outcome. Studies related to this Nigeria are limited.Objective: The aim was evaluate the pattern of feto-maternal outcome among women different body mass indices attending antenatal clinic Federal capital territory (FCT).Study design: This a longitudinal, multicentre study.Materials Methods: Two hundred twenty participants were recruited from 6 general hospitals FCT. Their calculated they categorized as underweight, normal weight, overweight obese accordingly. They followed up till 2 weeks postpartum. Maternal sought included gestational hypertension, diabetes mode delivery, postpartum haemorrhage, retained placenta perineal injury. Neonatal outcomes macrosomia, low birth hypoglycaemia, shoulder dystocia, stillbirth admission into special care baby unit (SCBU).Result: mean age 28.8 years ±4.7 parities ranging 0-8. majority them (39%) overweight. While most (118, 56.2%) had (NWG) pregnancy, 15(7.1%) (LWG) 77(36.6%) high (HWG). Most (95%) HWG women.
